As Fresh as it Gets!
To help shoppers select products that are "As Fresh as it Gets", San Mateo County's
array of locally harvested crab, salmon, produce and other fare will soon sport a bright
new logo that is the mark of freshness.
Shoppers can be assured that any product that carries the "As Fresh as it Gets" logo
was grown locally or harvested from San Mateo County's coast. The "As Fresh as it Gets"
campaign promotes the benefits of eating healthy, local food and drinks.
"The 'As Fresh as it Gets' logo will make it easier for consumers to choose health -
personal health through nutritious food, economic health through support of local farmers
and environmental health through a reduced carbon footprint" said Richard S. Gordon,
vice president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.
"As Fresh as it Gets" is a cooperative effort by the farming, fishing and hospitality
industries and County government to support and encourage consumption of local products.
The "As Fresh as it Gets" logo is the latest effort to highlight San Mateo County's
fresh produce, fish, crab, prawns and locally produced cheese, wine and micro brews.
San Mateo County's fishing industry and farmers may be overshadowed by biotechnology and
software developers but the County's 54 miles of coastline and dozens of farms produce
top quality fare.
Locally produced food is generally healthier, fresher, costs less and reduces pollution
because less shipping is required.
"Actively supporting our local agricultural heritage improves economic vitality of our
farmers and overall health for our community, especially our children," said Dr. Scott
Morrow.
The logo was designed by a locally grown artist, Monica Trego. Born and raised in Half
Moon Bay, Trego is passionate about the locavore movement - eating locally produced food
whenever possible. She has high hopes that the "As Fresh as it Gets" campaign will
further the cause and motivate people to educate themselves about the origin of their food.
Trego responded to a call for entries put out by the Coastal Arts League last year.
Fifty-six logo designs were submitted and 18 finalists were chosen for display at the
San Mateo County Fair. Over 65,000 fair goers voted on their favorite designs.
The new logo will show up in farmers' markets, produce stands and grocery stores throughout
San Mateo County. Consumers will be able to quickly identify food from local farmers and
fisherman when they see the brightly colored "As Fresh as it Gets" label.

San Mateo County offers dining at its best. Locally grown produce and fresh seafood,
multi-ethnic cuisine, and local wineries make dining on the Peninsula a truly fine
culinary experience. A new "San Mateo County: As Fresh as it Gets" awards program recognizes
local restaurants, hotels and caterers that make an effort to buy and serve produce from local
San Mateo County growers, seafood caught off San Mateo County's coastline, and beer and wine
made in the county. The San Mateo County Convention & Visitors Bureau (SMCCVB) and San Mateo
County Farm Bureau created the ongoing award program in cooperation with the San Mateo
County Harbor District.
We are proud to offer the new "As Fresh as it Gets" cookbook. Featuring recipes that include fresh
local produce and seafood found within the county. Over 130 recipes have been submitted from local
